Savannah Police discuss safety measures ahead of New Year’s Eve celebrations

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) – With New Year’s Eve festivities set for Wednesday evening, the Savannah Police Department (SPD) is urging residents and visitors to stay safe while enjoying the celebration.

SPD community engagement officer Rebekah Helmick told WTOC she has worked 10 New Year’s Eves with the department and highlighted several recurring safety concerns — most notably, celebratory gunfire.

“Sometimes there is celebratory fire, armed fire shooting going off,” Helmick said. “I’ve never written any citations as far as that goes, but that could happen.”…
