Four Wisconsin colleges report hazing violations in wake of new federal law

Four Wisconsin universities reported hazing incidents on their campuses in the wake of a new federal law mandating disclosure of hazing violations.

Fraternities, sororities, sports teams and other campus organizations have often been associated with hazing rituals that can range from humiliation to physical injury. The consequences can be fatal. Since 2000, there have been more than 50 hazing-related deaths nationally, according to the Clery Center, a campus safety nonprofit.

More than 40 states, including Wisconsin, have anti-hazing laws on the books. But the Stop Campus Hazing Act creates a national standard for reporting hazing incidents. Institutions were required to publish campus hazing transparency reports on their websites by Dec. 23…
