Detox center’s closing will impact already stressed police, hospitals

MADISON, Wis. — Tellurian Detoxification Center will close Jan. 1, after Dane County stopped funding. It’s a move the Dane County Sheriff said will cause disruptions to law enforcement as well. This move only closes the detox center, and not other services Tellurian provides.

Funding issues plagued the center on Industrial Drive for a while, and in September Tellurian told Dane County it could no longer continue services and gave notice the center would close, according to Tellurian President and CEO Kevin Florek. The county initially said it would fund the center for the first three months of 2026 while Tellurian looked for more funding, Florek said. The county then made a request for an increase in services, which led to questions from Tellurian.

“It was very confusing, and it seemed like we didn’t have much time to prepare,” Florek said. “Since that time, late November, we’ve come back a couple times saying, You know what? We’ll take the high road. We will accept the 90-day extension, even though you haven’t answered our basic questions in good faith. It’s what’s best for the community, and that was not responded to.”…
