Snow squall hits DMV on New Year’s Day, prompting weather alerts

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — During the early-morning hours of New Year’s Day, a snow squall pushed across the DMV, prompting weather alerts.

According to officials, the snow squall was detected around 4:30 a.m. on Jan. 1 in Montgomery County, moving about 35 mph. The intense burst of heavy snow encouraged gusty winds.

The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a snow squall warning in Northern Virginia and parts of Western Maryland, effective until 5:30 a.m. on Thursday. Officials noted that the squall will hit the Interstate 95, 66, 270 and 70 corridors.
