Fifth man arrested in Independence Mall gun incident

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – A fifth man has been arrested in connection with a gun incident at Independence Mall on Dec. 23 that sent shoppers fleeing for safety during holiday shopping.

Zymond Rashawn Ty’Neil Johnson, 18, was arrested Thursday, Jan. 1, on charges of carrying a concealed gun, going armed to the terror of the people and disorderly conduct in a public building. Warrants show Johnson is accused of bringing a black assault rifle into the mall.

Four other men were previously arrested after the incident that prompted reports of shots fired around 3:45 p.m. on Dec. 23.

Wilmington Police responded to the mall after citizens called 911 reporting men walking around with guns, including at least one rifle. Police said the incident started when two rival groups encountered each other at the mall…
