Cliff Drive offers bluffs, history & quiet trails in one of KC’s hidden corners

Hidden in Kansas City’s Northeast, my favorite part of Cliff Drive is a secluded trail that has been a regular stop for my family for 20 years.

Where limestone bluffs rise above the East Bottoms and the steady hum of industry drifts below, this section through Kessler Park offers an escape that feels far removed from the city around it.

The entire route runs a little more than 4 miles through Kessler Park, connecting The Paseo and Independence Avenue to Gladstone Boulevard. Part of Kansas City’s Park and Boulevard System for more than a century, Cliff Drive was designated a Missouri Scenic Byway in 2000, a title reflected in its limestone bluffs, wooded overlooks and views of the river valley below.

It is now fully closed to vehicle traffic and is used year-round for walking, running and biking, hiking, rock climbing and visitors looking to enjoy nature. Dogs are welcome on leashes…
