Wind causes landing plane to clip wingtip on tarmac at CHO

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – A Skywest Canadair flight from Chicago needed a second attempt to land at Charlottesville Regional Airport on Monday morning after it struck its right wingtip on the tarmac on its first approach.

“SkyWest flight 5532, operating as United Express from Chicago landed safely in Charlottesville, Virginia on Dec. 29 after wind gusts caused a wingtip to briefly contact the runway,” a Skywest spokesperson told Cville Right Now in an email. “There were no injuries and passengers deplaned normally at the gate.”

The Aviation Herald reported the Canadair CRJ-700, registration N779SK, “went around from very low height on approach to Charlottesville’s runway 21 but struck its right-hand wing tip onto the runway surface.”…
