Pedestrian critically injured in Santa Rosa hit-and-run

(KRON) — A pedestrian who was struck by a pickup truck in a Santa Rosa crosswalk on Wednesday evening is in critical condition, according to police. The 31-year-old driver, who fled the scene in his Toyota Tacoma, later turned himself in.

The Santa Rosa Police Department responded at 7:13 p.m. to Morgan Street and College Avenue on the report of a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle. Arriving first responders found a man in his 70s unresponsive and lying in the roadway. The man was rushed to a nearby hospital with serious injuries.

Officers located the bumper and front license plate of a blue 2019 Toyota Tacoma at the scene. According to investigators, the pedestrian was crossing College Avenue in the eastern crosswalk when he was hit by the truck that was traveling at approximately 35 miles per hour.

The driver who had fled the scene in the Tacoma, later identified as Brigido Pena Villanueva, 31, of Greenfield, called Santa Rosa PD dispatch 24 minutes later, authorities said.
