Iowa’s hands-free law linked to all-time low in traffic fatalities

DES MOINES, Iowa (WHO) — Iowa’s hands-free law is now in full effect, and traffic fatalities are at an all-time low. The Iowa State Patrol said the two are directly connected.

The law went into effect on July 1, 2025 with a six-month probationary period where officers only handed out warnings and flyers informing drivers of the new law. Iowa departments handed out a total of over 10,000 warnings since the first of July.

Now, starting January 1, drivers could face a fine of $100 when pulled over for being on their phone. The Iowa State Patrol said it doesn’t matter why the driver is holding the phone, it is still a violation of the new law…
