Albany mayor addresses nightlife safety concerns

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — After signing an executive order establishing a nightlife economy council, Albany Mayor Dorcey Applyrs addressed concerns that an increased nightlife presence could mean more opportunities for violence. She said her administration hopes to increase the city’s ambassador program, which pays people to walk around downtown and maintain order.

“One of the things that deters crime is presence, density, people, and so that ambassador program would help address that concern,” she said. “Not only for the woman walking with her kids or even men who may not feel safe walking in the city of Albany, but it also provides a safety measure for our business owners.”

The ambassadors program partners with the Interfaith Partnership for the Homeless by employing currently or formerly unhoused people. Ambassadors are also responsible for greeting visitors and answering questions.
