Hundreds take icy plunge in Susquehanna River to raise funds for shelter animals

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHP) — For nearly 30 years, participants have been diving into the icy Susquehanna River to support the Humane Society of Harrisburg Area. This year, over 200 people took part in the Penguin Plunge—all to raise money for homeless cats and dogs.

“My dog Delilah, she passed away a couple years ago so I did it for her originally,” said Ed Heffernan, a returning participant. His goal was to be in the river for three minutes. “It’s just a good vibe here and everybody is really cool and it’s a good time.”
