Inmate, 65, dies in JSO custody after contracting infectious disease during medical procedure

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A man who was in the custody of the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office died on Thursday after experiencing complications during a planned medical procedure, officials said.

According to JSO, Dominick Maccariella, 65, was admitted to UF Health on Dec. 17 for a planned medical procedure, but experienced complications and contracted an infectious disease.

Throughout his stay at the hospital, Maccariella’s health continued to deteriorate, and he died shortly after 10 p.m. on New Year’s Day, police said…
