HENRICO, Va. (WWBT) – Multiple chain stores in Henrico County are incorrectly charging customers a 5-cent plastic bag tax, despite the county having no such ordinance in place.
Henrico County business inspectors visited stores after receiving complaints from residents shopping at Walmart, CVS and Dollar Tree locations. The new Richmond plastic bag tax only applies within city limits, not Henrico County.
“Henrico County has not imposed a tax on plastic bags. State law allows localities to do so, but the county hasn’t,” said John Vithoulkas, Henrico County manager. “And being that we have received calls from residents, we are literally out here informing businesses that there is no plastic bag tax in the county.”…
