Fitness fundraiser held for 12-year-old battling leukemia

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — When a child is diagnosed with cancer, it takes a village. On Monday afternoon, that village came together at Christian Brothers Academy in Albany, where a fitness fundraiser was held in support of a 12-year-old girl from Scotia-Glenville Middle School battling leukemia.

12-year-old Ryann Dieterich was diagnosed with T-cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia at the beginning of last month — and treatment began immediately. “Everything came all of a sudden. She got into treatment literally the same day they found out. And she has a procedure in three days,” said Ryann’s older sister, 19-year-old Reagan.

Ryann’s siblings said that the speed of it all has been overwhelming, and that the impact on Ryann’s daily life has been hard. Reagan explained, “She’s my best friend. We’re like almost seven years apart, but we do everything together. And being away at college has been really hard, especially now. I miss her so much, but she’s just like a little bundle of joy,”

“After her surgery in January, she’s going to be at the hospital like four times a week getting chemo all throughout the day. So that’s definitely going to be even more hard. She can’t leave the house, really,” Reagan continued.

When Adam Costa — a 20-year-old EMT and CBA grad — learned about Ryann’s diagnosis, he decided to act. Costa is now in Marine Corps ROTC and organized this charity workout at his former school…
