Fireworks malfunction sparks barn fire, injures operator on New Year’s Eve in Portage

PORTAGE, MI — A fireworks display malfunctioned on New Year’s Eve in Portage, causing a barn fire and injuring the person attempting to prepare the show.

The Portage Department of Public Safety responded to a structure fire at approximately 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 31, on the 1200 block of Holiday Lane. The structure is just north of I-94 between Westnedge Avenue and Oakland Drive.
