Toledo was founded on belief. In 1837, the communities of Vistula and Port Lawrence merged after recognizing that division was limiting opportunity. Unity unlocked prosperity, allowing Toledo to capitalize on transformative investments like the Miami-Erie Canal, which would forever change the trajectory of northwest Ohio. Over the next century, more than 350,000 people would come to call Toledo home.
