A huge pattern change ahead for the CSRA

Saturday night update: Happy Saturday evening, everyone! If you have been stuck under the gray skies today, you know that “the wedge” has been holding firm across the area. While the rain has moved out, the moisture hasn’t gone anywhere, and that is going to set the stage for a murky start to our Sunday morning.

The main story for tonight and early tomorrow is the fog. As a weak front drifts through, skies might try to clear out a bit late tonight. While that sounds promising, it actually helps the temperature drop closer to the dew point, which is a perfect recipe for fog formation. We expect fog to develop after midnight and become widespread by daybreak. We have the potential of dense fog, so if you have early plans for church, golf, or travel on Sunday morning, you will want to allow extra time. Visibility could drop below a quarter-mile in some spots while temperatures hover in the chilly mid-30s to low 40s.

Patience will be key tomorrow morning. The fog and low clouds might be stubborn through the mid-morning hours, but they are expected to burn off by lunchtime. Once the sun breaks through, it turns into a decent afternoon with highs recovering into the upper 50s to near 60, which is right around average for early January…
