Raleigh teacher fatally attacked while on phone with police, reporting burglary

A widely known teach at Raleigh’s Ravenscroft School died after a burglary at her home off of St. Mary’s Street near Fred Fletcher Park early Saturday morning, police said.

Police said officers responded at 6:30 a.m. to a report of a burglary in progress at a home in the 800 block of Clay Street. While the victim was still on the phone with police, the burglar began to attack her, police said.

When officers arrived, they found the victim — identified as Zoe Welsh — suffering from life-threatening injuries, police said. They did not describe the nature of the injuries. Welsh was taken to a local hospital, where she died…
