The concerns by many residents about the safety of pedestrians is a direct result of the Developer’s poor planning and desire to maximize profits. Most city and county government building codes around the country require developers to construct pedestrian sidewalks along streets in residential areas. I believe because of The Villages Developer’s influence over the county governments (Lake, Marion, and Sumter) that requirement doesn’t exist here. However, our neighbors like Ocala, Orlando, etc. require sidewalks. Here the Developer expects pedestrians, some with walkers and electric wheelchairs, to travel in the streets or on the MMTPs (Multi-Modal Transportation Paths), a very dangerous condition especially at night. It will take county governments to update their building codes in order…..
