Major Mountain Travel Impacts Expected; Weekend Brings Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms

Here in the valleys, we’re looking at a significant rain, possible thunderstorms, and gusty winds this weekend. With sufficient low-level moisture, instability, and transport, some of these storms could pack a punch. We’ll be watching for storm development and will continue to monitor them as they push through the Valley. There’s even a chance for strong to severe storms this afternoon and early evening, so we’ll be keeping a close eye on that.

The forecast calls for a broad area of precipitation through the overnight, with another band expected on Sunday. Between these main waves, we’ll see scattered showers and thunderstorms. Rainfall rates could be moderate to heavy at times, where rates up to an inch per hour are possible in some downpours. We are monitoring the potential for flooding conditions.

In the Sierra, snow levels will drop to 5,000-6,000 feet this afternoon through Sunday morning, reaching 4,500 feet by Monday morning. We’re expecting significant snow accumulations: 1 to 3 feet above 5,000 feet, and 3 to 5 feet above 6,000 feet, with locally higher amounts possible. Winds gusting as high as 55 mph in the mountains will combine with the snow to create near whiteout conditions. Travel through mountain passes could be very difficult to impossible. A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for the Sierra, highlighting the expected heavy snow and strong winds. We strongly advise having alternate routes, backup plans, and always carrying a safety kit if travel is essential…
