5 dogs survive Wagoner County fire as rural Oklahoma rescues stretch to help

WAGONER COUNTY – In ruralOklahoma, when disaster strikes, help is not always close by, especially for animals. Five dogs survived a house fire this week in Wagoner County and will eventually need permanent homes, underscoring a growing strain on animal rescues across the state.

Rescue Steps In After the Fire

Fire crews responded Monday, December 29, to a home near East 751 Road and 278th Road. The interior of the house sustained heavy damage. Firefighters found two people injured, one taken to the hospital by ambulance and the other by helicopter. Along with the residents, five dogs were also pulled from the burning home. Three of the dogs are now in the care of Memphis Street Animal Rescue, a nonprofit based in Broken Arrow that rehouses dogs and cats.
