Man Arrested After Starved Dogs Discovered in East Bexar County; Cockfighting Operation Also Suspected

BEXAR COUNTY, TX - A call about a vehicle fire in Adkins led Bexar County deputies to uncover a disturbing case of animal cruelty and suspected cockfighting on New Year’s Day.

On January 1, 2026, deputies were dispatched to the 600 block of Kayroe Drive after reports of a vehicle fully engulfed in flames. While securing the scene, a deputy noticed a severely malnourished tan dog chained to a fence on the property.

Deputies made contact with Aundra Mathis, who was uncooperative and initially denied any involvement with the animals. As the investigation continued, deputies discovered three severely malnourished dogs and more than 60 chickens and roosters confined in cages without adequate food, water, or shelter…
