First Responders Spotlight: Trio of frozen water rescues

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — For January’s First Responders Spotlight, we highlight those who step up with moments to spare during icy and risky rescues.

We start back in early December in Greece, a driver ran off the road and crashed through a frozen pond along the Lake Ontario State Parkway. When members of Lakeshore Fire got there, bystanders were already in the water trying to save the driver.

Firefighters in cold water gear got in to pull the victim and witnesses out. Thankfully, no one was seriously hurt.

Just days later, the same department got another similar call. There was a kayaker in the water just outside the mouth of Braddock Bay.

Crews arrived just as the victim made it to shore with severe exposure to the brutal conditions. They immediately started EMS care while waiting for the ambulance…
