Fort Wayne’s unhoused speak on encampments, Rivergreenway site cleaned up

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE)— In the days leading up to Christmas, an encampment for unhoused people under the Veterans Memorial Bridge under Spy Run Avenue had spilled over onto the Rivergreenway Trail. Chairs, clothing, bins of belongings, and trash blocked the path.

WANE 15 reached out to the City of Fort Wayne at the time of the first complaints on Dec. 23 and 24. The city’s protocol requires a 72-hour notice to be posted at the site before an encampment cleanup can occur, according to city Public Information Officer John Perlich.

Perlich said when police posted the notice on Dec. 26, cleanup was already underway. By the first week of January, the path and space under the bridge were nearly spotless. This temporary encampment was not the only one that exists in the city, though…
