Portage woman shares story after losing more than $20K in romance scam

PORTAGE, Mich. — A nonprofit called FightCyberCrime.org says fewer than 10% of romance scams are ever reported — and because of that — scammers and cyber criminals are able to steal billions of dollars every year. They say criminals will prey on a victim’s emotions in order to steal money and personal information.

That’s what happened to a woman in Portage named Beth Hyland. Now, she’s sharing her story to keep it from happening to someone else.

“It wasn’t the monetary loss, but it was the betrayal,” she said.
