Three charges dropped against man accused of drugging teens’ ice cream

Three of four charges filed against a man accused of placing drugs in two teenage girls’ food have been dropped.

James Yokeley Jr., 66, faced charges after video footage revealed that he had placed pills in their ice creams at a Wilmington Dairy Queen, according to an Aug. 27, 2025, news release from the Wilmington Police Department. Yokeley served as the chair of the Surry County Board of Elections at the time but resigned shortly after being charged.

Two counts of contaminating food/drink with a controlled substance and felony possession of a Schedule 1 substance have been dismissed. According to court documents filed on Dec. 22, 2025, lab testing confirmed that the substance was not controlled under North Carolina General Statutes…
