Berkeley County leaders warn of kratom addiction risks at town hall

MONCKS CORNER, S.C. (WCSC) — Berkeley County leaders are hosting a town hall meeting to warn residents about a legal drug sold in gas stations and grocery stores that officials say could spark an addiction crisis.

The meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at the Berkeley County Administration Building. WakeUp Carolina, the Kennedy Center and local leaders organized the event to educate the public about kratom before use becomes more widespread.

Kratom is sold as pills, powder, tea and in packages that look like gummy candy. Some people use it for chronic pain relief, but experts say it can be as addictive as opioids and lead to dependency and misuse…
