DUI suspect in golf cart gets lost after sipping wine at restaurant in The Villages

A drunk driving suspect in a golf cart said she got lost after sipping wine at a restaurant in The Villages.

Jane Heroux, 73, of Spruce Creek South in Summerfield, was driving a red 2017 Yamaha golf cart at about 5:30 p.m. Friday on El Camino Real near the entrance to the Village of Alhambra when she was spotted by a Sumter County sheriff’s deputy. The deputy initiated a traffic stop because the golf cart was traveling in an unauthorized area. When speaking to Heroux, the deputy recognized “the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from her breath,” according to the report.

The Massachusetts native admitted she’d had two glasses of Chardonnay wine at Applebee’s in the Spanish Springs area. She said she had gotten lost and was trying to get home.

Heroux agreed to participate in field sobriety exercises, but her poor performance led deputies to conclude she had been driving impaired. She provided breath samples that registered .254 and .260 blood alcohol content. She was also driving on a suspended license…
