Gas station will move forward on Route 20 after Market Basket appeal fails

SHREWSBURY – A monthslong battle between Market Basket and a proposed gas station across Route 20 has been decided. On Dec. 21, the Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA) upheld the Planning Board’s decision to approve plans for the gas station; Market Basket had appealed the decision in November.

“It is clear that the applicant had sufficient information for the Planning Board to make its decision. I think the Planning Board took a look at every angle it could. It evaluated the information and made a decision, and I don’t see any reason to change the decision,” said ZBA member Ann Refolo.

In hearings dating back to December 2024, the Planning Board heard plans for a YATCO gas station at 193 Hartford Turnpike. The plans call for a 7,000-square-foot building with a convenience store, drive-through window, and quick-serve restaurant. A 4,800-square-foot car wash would be built adjacent to the gas station on the 3.5-acre lot.
