Paola Maravilla recalls growing up between the bright yellow and seafoam green walls of her family’s Mexican panaderia, or bakery, in northeast Salem. Flanked by a nearly 6-foot-tall display of pastries, she would emerge from the office in the back to help count customers’ totals, tallying up each 50- to 75-cent treat.
Maravilla’s Bakery & Coffee has been a Salem staple since 2008, when the shop opened in the North Lancaster neighborhood. The shop has since doubled in size, as the owners took over the neighboring business in 2017 and converted it into a coffee shop.
“It’s been so heartwarming to see all the appreciation and love that people have, not just for the business but for my parents,” Maravilla said of seeing the bakery expand as she’s grown older. “I know that they’re doing something right.”…
