Hegeman first opened the store on Lark Street in 1980 before moving to Delaware Plaza and then finally Stuyvesant Plaza in 1984. At 71 years old, he told NEWS10 that he’s been thinking about retiring for about three years now.

“You give up a lot when you run a retail store,” said Hegeman. “I don’t get a lot of time off.”

Silver Parrot’s last day is February 28. Hegeman’s website, Urban Sterling Silver, will also be shutting down on that date. The store’s inventory is on clearance through February. In his retirement, Hegeman said he’ll be traveling and visiting his children and grandchildren.
