St. Landry Parish inmate injury during attempted suicide blamed on jail maintenance

OPELOUSAS, La. (KLFY) — An inmate in the St. Landry Parish jail attempted suicide Friday, in what Sheriff Bobby Guidroz called a lapse in maintenance by the parish government.

“The inmate was able to use part of the metal ceiling tiles within the cell, which have been rusted and damaged,” Guidroz said. “We are grateful that no life-threatening injuries occurred, much in part of the Suicide Watch Plan operating as planned.”

Guidroz said the damaged ceiling tiles were listed on a December 2025 Building Maintenance Inspection conducted by Sheriff’s Office Correctional Staff…
