Wegmans debuts new safety technology for select stores, Erie not included

Wegmans confirmed it has begun using facial recognition at select stores in New York as part of its theft-prevention strategy.

The company said the technology helps identify repeat offenders and protect employees, but shoppers here in Erie have mixed reactions.

“Probably not the voice recognition, but I feel like face scan, cause I know Walmart does something similar, to scan your faces to prevent theft, but voice scan probably not, I think that’s a little bit much, but face scan I can understand,” said Edy Wellington, a Wegmans shopper.

“Well, we’ve been on camera, gas stations and stores for what, 15, 20 years now? This is simply the next evolution in capturing your data. You’re not going to be able to hide out in public anymore,” said Doug Still, an Erie County resident…
