A Maryland corrections officer was killed in a single-vehicle crash on New Year’s Eve, just hours after colleagues gathered to celebrate the end of his decades-long career.

The Prince George’s County Department of Corrections announced the death of Master Corporal John Raymond Nicholson in a statement shared on Facebook, noting that the 57-year-old died on Dec. 31, 2025 — the same day he officially retired from the department.

“MCpl. Nicholson started his career on June 18, 2001, and retired December 31, 2025,” the department wrote. “A retirement celebration was held for him at the facility on Wednesday where some of our retirees came back to see him off.”…
