Docs: Man was at bar before fiery I-10 near Geronimo crash

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The man whom the El Paso Police Department had identified as the one responsible for the fiery crash on Dec. 21 on Interstate 10 near Geronimo had been drinking in a Downtown bar before the incident, according to court documents obtained by KTSM.

As KTSM previously reported, on Sunday, Dec. 21, a truck slammed into other vehicles on I-10 East near Geronimo and rolled off the highway before it caught on fire, taking down a massive freeway sign. As a result, three people were taken to the hospital, one with serious injuries and two others with non-life-threatening injuries.

Days later, Andres Rubio was identified by police as the man driving the truck responsible for the crash. He was arrested on Christmas Eve and charged with intoxication assault with a vehicle, causing serious bodily injury. Jail records show that Rubio was given a $75,000 bond. However, he posted bond the same day he was arrested.

Court documents state that shortly after 8:10 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 21, EPPD officers were dispatched to I-10 East at exit 24 Paisano regarding a motor vehicle incident.
