Secret Service card skimming operation that stopped in San Antonio prevented $400 million in fraud

U.S. Secret Service operations around the nation aimed at curbing credit card skimming, including a two-day stint in San Antonio, helped prevent more than $400 million in fraud loss, the agency has announced.

Throughout 2025, the Secret Service partnered with local law enforcement agencies across the nation to conduct 22 operations targeting credit card skimming devices.

The devices, which mimic real PIN pads and card terminals, are placed on top of point-of-sale machines at places like ATMs and gas stations. They scan and steal customers’ credit card information, often encoding the data onto another card to use…
