Houston’s MLK parades to unite in a single event this year

HOUSTON (CW39) – Houston will make history in 2026 by combining its long-divided Martin Luther King Jr. Day parades into a single event for the first time, creating what city leaders are calling the MLK Unity Parade.

“It’s not just a parade, it’s a movement, and we’re continuing that movement all the way from 1978 until the present,” said Teresa Brewer, president of the Black Heritage Society.

For 30 years, Houston marked the federal holiday with two separate MLK parades held on the same day, one in downtown Houston and the other in Midtown. Both honoring the legacy of Dr. King, but the split reflected a deeper division that dated back years…
