Charles City Man Accused of Fraudulent Banking in Eastern Iowa

A Charles City man, convicted in Floyd County last year for assault, has been arrested for allegedly defrauding an eastern Iowa bank out of over $7,000.

Charles City Police say a warrant check in the 600 block of Gilbert Street, just after 12:30 am December 20, 2025, resulted in 37-year-old Cortez Jones being taken into custody. He was wanted on a Linn County warrant charging him with second-degree theft, a Class D felony.

According to the criminal complaint, Jones is accused of making several mobile deposits of checks into his account at Fairfax State Bank in Fairfax between July 11 and July 14, 2025, and subsequently either withdrawing cash or transferring money to a CashApp. The checks were later returned and found to not be valid, resulting in funds obtained from the bank of almost $7,000 in checks and over $7,200 in total funds including overdraft fees…
