Scammers impersonate local pastors in new ‘pastor texting’ scam targeting churchgoers

EUGENE, Ore. — Scammers are at it again, the Eugene Police Department warns. This time, they are targeting attendees at several local churches.

The scammers send a text from someone purporting to be their pastors (by the actual name of the pastor) and advise of an urgent matter to handle. The targeted victim is told to text back as soon as they get the message.

“Please do not text back!” Eugene PD urges. “If you are concerned it may be legitimate, reach out independently to a known number for that church or organization.”…
