DES MOINES, Iowa — A long-time health and community staple will close at the end of February so work can begin on a new project to take its place.
On Thursday, the YMCA of Greater Des Moines announced the John R. Grubb Community YMCA will close on February 28th. The Grubb Y has been at 11th Street and College Avenue since opening in 1994, in a city-owned building that was once the location of Dowling Catholic High School.

“People came here, and stayed here, because they felt recognized, respected and valued here,” said Cameron Nicholson, president and CEO of the YMCA of Greater Des Moines and a former executive director of the Grubb Y. “The upcoming closing evokes a lot of emotions, but the overwhelming feeling we have is one of pride – pride in all the staff, volunteers and members, past and present, who made the Grubb Y special for every person who walked in our door.”
