LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) — Lincoln Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird is urging Lincoln residents to roll up their sleeves during National Blood Donor Month. On Wednesday, she issued a proclamation at the Nebraska Community Blood Bank.
The blood bank says area hospitals currently have about four days’ worth of blood on hand, with type O blood down to just two days. The goal is at least seven days of supply, which would require about 1,000 donors each week.
Dr. Jeffrey Gold, University of Nebraska System President and former heart surgeon, said it’s critical to have plenty of blood on hand. He has seen how devastating it is when families are told transfusions have to wait due to lack of blood during his time working in New York City.
