Woman files lawsuit after New Mexico State Police chase leads to wrong way driver crash

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – A man is accused of fleeing from an officer, driving the wrong way, and crashing into a woman. That woman is now suing New Mexico State Police, claiming they are partially responsible for the incident. The dangerous crash, which occurred in October 2024, has left her with severe injuries and a lengthy recovery ahead. The woman was struck by a driver, 21-year-old Jaiden Wetsel, who was fleeing from state police.

“It’s clear that she’s going to be dealing with this for a very long time,” said David Adams, the victim Jasminn Gurule’s attorney. “She’s a university student, and she actually wants to get in the field, eventually of working in physical therapy. And so some of this stuff is right in her alley, unfortunately, and fortunately, it’s going to give her a whole different experience too.”

During the chase along Paseo del Norte last October, police reported that Wetsel was driving at such high speeds that the officer had to call off the pursuit for safety reasons. At one point, Wetsel began driving the wrong way and collided with Jasmin Gurule…
