Syracuse snowfall could set record for snowiest day

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — Last Tuesday, Syracuse was dumped on with 24.2″ of lake effect snow. At the time, it looked like it would put December 30, 2025 into the Syracuse weather records as the second snowiest day in history trailing only February 15, 1946, when 34.0″ of snow fell.

However, it now looks like there is a real chance that last month’s heavy snowfall may be elevated to the snowiest day.

An astute Storm Team weather watcher pointed out what appears to be a discrepancy in the February 1946 data. While temperatures were certainly cold enough for snow on February 15, the data for February 16 shows a snow depth of only 2″, which seemed odd a day after nearly three feet of snow fell.

After this was pointed out to meteorologists at the National Weather Service (NWS) in Binghamton, the data in question was passed along to the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) in Asheville North Carolina.
