Mexican man accused of biting ICE officer in Lafayette faces 20 years in federal prison

In December, a federal grand jury in Lafayette indicted a Mexican citizen with assaulting a federal officer and causing bodily injury.

Maximiliano Perez-Perez, a Mexican citizen the U.S. Attorney’s Office said is illegally in the United States, faces up to 20 years in federal prison for the charge.

According to court records, 22-year-old Perez-Perez was stopped by immigration enforcement officers on Nov. 21, after they received a tip about a van carrying people in the country illegally. When officers tried to detain him, Perez-Perez refused to get out of the van and held onto the steering wheel. After ICE officers pulled him out, he ran away on foot. Officers caught him, but he continued to resist by biting an officer’s hand hard enough to draw blood. Blood from the injury was visible on Perez-Perez’s face…
