OIG report finds more than $770K in overpayments tied to New Orleans traffic camera program

A new report from the New Orleans office of inspector general is raising renewed concerns about the city’s traffic camera program, finding that while some improvements were made after earlier warnings, key fixes were not sustained, allowing more than $770,000 in new overpayments to accumulate.

The report is a follow-up to a 2020 inspector general audit that found drivers were being overcharged through the city’s automated traffic enforcement system. That earlier report prompted the city to issue refunds and implement changes meant to prevent future errors. However, auditors say those safeguards were not permanently built into the system.

According to the inspector general, after the initial refunds were issued, the process used to identify and prevent overpayments was not consistently maintained. As a result, from 2021 through 2024, the city accumulated more than $770,000 in additional overpayments that could be owed back to drivers…
