Carrollton police investigate fatal shooting involving teens and self-defense claim

CARROLLTON, Texas A 16-year-old male was fatally shot on Monday evening in Carrollton, prompting a homicide investigation by local authorities. The incident occurred on Heads Lane, where the teen was reportedly involved in a robbery attempt, according to the Carrollton Police Department.

The North Texas Emergency Communications Center received a call shortly after 7 p.m. on January 5, 2026, regarding a weapons investigation in the 2200 block of Heads Lane. A subsequent call from a female reported that her son had been shot. The victim was transported to Carrollton Regional Hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.

Detectives determined that the shooting took place in the roadway on Heads Lane. The other party involved was identified as 20-year-old Adan Sandoval, of Carrollton. According to the investigation, the 16-year-old male, along with 17-year-old John Avila, 17-year-old Markellin Soto, and two 15-year-old females, traveled to Carrollton to meet Sandoval under the pretense of selling illegal substances with the intent to commit a robbery.
