New Terminal 6 operator wants to double cargo container service

The new operator of the Port of Portland’s cargo container terminal on Wednesday described big plans for the facility, which as recently as two years ago was in danger of closing.

In September, the port leased the 202-acre facility to California’s Harbor Industrial Services. The seven-year lease, which went into effect Jan. 1, includes four five-year renewal options. The company also purchased the facility’s seven cranes.

At a launch event Wednesday, a Harbor Industrial executive said the company wants to double cargo shipments this year, with a focus on Oregon goods. It could also soon add a third carrier to the two who currently utilize the facility. Down the road, more shipping destinations could be added…
