Man accused of killing parents in Concord on New Year’s Eve dies in jail

(KRON) — A Concord man who faced murder charges for allegedly killing his parents on New Year’s Eve has died in jail a little more than a week after his arrest.

The inmate, 61-year-old Kirk Richardson, was found dead in his cell at the Martinez Detention Facility Thursday, the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office announced Friday.

Richardson was taken to the hospital around 5:38 a.m. that morning after he injured himself by intentionally banging his head on objects inside his cell, the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office said. He was taken to the hospital by paramedics and the hospital cleared him to return to jail around 8:30 a.m.

“He was uncooperative with deputy sheriffs while being transported back to [the jail],” the sheriff’s office said. “While at [the Martinez Detention Facility] he was given medication by medical staff.”
