Grandmother of a Leah Chase School student pledges $2M to keep the school open

As supporters race to prevent the Leah Chase School from being shut down, a student’s grandmother and the family of the school’s namesake have offered to donate more than $2 million to the school if the Orleans Parish School Board agrees to keep it open.

Karen Oser Edmunds, whose 9-year-old grandson Oscar attends the Leah Chase School, offered to give $2 million to a fund supporting the school. To receive the money, which would likely more than cover the school’s projected deficit for the next two years, the board must agree to keep operating the school for at least that long.

“If they need money to stay open, I can fund it for two years,” Edmunds said she told her son, Chris Edmunds, after learning that the board was contemplating closing the one-year-old school. “I have enough and I’ll do that for my grandson.”…
