UAB working to expand access to pre-hospital blood transfusions

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – How quickly someone receives a blood transfusion after a car crash could be the difference between life and death. Bleeding to death after a car crash is the number one cause of preventable mortality.

Health leaders at UAB say pre-hospital blood transfusions are not available everywhere in Alabama.

“Every eligible patient who needs pre-hospital blood should get pre-hospital blood,” said Dr. Mohammad Zain Hashmi, assistant professor in the Department of Surgery at UAB.
